Colin Farrell doesn’t have many ‘true friends.’ But Brendan Gleeson is one of his few. So when Gleeson, who plays Farrell, becomes the new boyfriend, how do they handle the truth? (He’s not exactly straight, but he’s on a three-month relationship with someone called ‘Jenny’.) On our PSA-approved date, the man who once played Jack Nicholson’s twin on TV plays a gay guy. Gleeson tries to play straight, but then his real ‘friends’ catch on and he is shunned. He goes to a gay bar and meets his new ‘friends.’
There’s a scene where Gleeson is sitting in the bath with a girl friend. The camera takes a close-up of his eyes, and the girl gets all teary. And then she tells him, “This isn’t a good idea. Colin, you’re hurting me.”
Lara Jean Summers, author of the bestseller Bummer, is the new YA author to give this advice to kids who want to hook up with other kids. She doesn’t mean hook up for the wrong reasons, which I think makes her more of a therapist than a sex advice author.
“If you’re in a relationship: don’t make it less than what it is. If there’s any chance that you’re going to be more, more, more, do whatever you want, so there’s no question of ‘what is?’ If you have a feeling that something between you and this person is going to go further than you’ve thought, you have to just keep it up.”
It’s not quite the advice that I wanted. I’m not a huge fan of YA literature, but I read her books because I wanted to see what she did next. So I went on a hook-up binge and wrote this article about it. She responded with an email saying she wanted to talk to me.
We went over our text exchange and I think we are both relieved about the whole thing because we can say “at least” we got to know each other without having to be a whole lot of creepy. I think she’s a wonderful writer, but I think we are both glad to have had those conversations.
