Chris Rock will perform historic live comedy special for Netflix in 2023

By the time the comedian and actor delivers his live album in 2023, he won’t be much older than the late John O’Hurhan.

He’ll be in his 30s or 40s when he tells his story.

The performer, who is the creator of the comic-rapper persona known as Donald Glover, was looking to get his music off the ground. His goal was to get the music right and make sure it was consistent. He wanted to be able to go into a club and tell his funny story without worrying about whether things sounded good.

What he ended up creating was an album that sounds like no other comedian’s album. It’s one that was designed with the live performance in mind. Rock decided to hold down the center of the stage and let Glover tell the story at the center of the stage.

Rock, a big fan of Glover, got on board the project. For the most part, he’s made a success of his own solo comedy career. But his comedy, especially the humor he puts on songs like “Rise Up” with the rapper Drake, is at its best when he’s making fun of himself for being onstage. He calls that a “silly show” and it’s the way he likes to do it.

Rock and Glover agreed to bring their album, “Live at the Beacon Theater,” to Netflix. (Rock and Glover did their first shows on Netflix.) That decision ended up being a big one: The comedy, rock and hip-hop star met with Netflix executives and pitched a live album that would be produced with Netflix’s help. He got the green light and is working with a team of comedians who could be called “the greatest comedy team in television,” Rock said.
