Paul Pelosi released from hospital after skull fracture from hammer attack A former House Democratic leader is expected to make a full recovery after suffering a brain injury.
Albany, New York — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was placed in a medically induced coma Friday after being injured in a hammer attack and suffering a mild stroke.
Her speech was slurred at times as she was transported to a hospital, where she was “alert and responsive,” said her spokesman, Drew Hammill. Her mother, meanwhile, released a statement saying she was doing “intense therapy” and hoped she would wake up soon.
“My daughter is deeply appreciative and appreciates all the support and prayers sent to her and our family and wants to thank the people of New York, their elected and legislative leaders, police officials and hospital staff who have provided our family and she and her health care team with everything they need,” Pelosi’s mother Elizabeth said.
Pelosi and her husband, former California Rep. Xavier Becerra, were both in New York City for a fundraising event when a security guard at the home where the couple was staying heard what sounded like a “heavy metal percussion,” he told NBC News.
A second security guard, who was standing nearby, told Becerra to look out the window and saw a woman who was “punching something hard against the building.”
“I saw the security guard go outside. He called the police. He told me, ‘There’s a woman pummeling a guy,'” Becerra said.
The guard then told Becerra that the woman was “punching a mailbox,” Becerra said.
“He said, ‘She’s probably going to try to smash the mailbox,'” Becerra said. “So he went back into the apartment. There was no sign of anyone trying to break the mailbox.”
Becerra called the police, who arrived at the apartment and arrested the woman.
Pelosi and Becerra returned to the apartment to check on Pelosi and found her in the living room, he said.
The former California lawmaker underwent brain surgery to repair brain damage, according to her spokesman, Drew Hammill.
Pelosi was taken off a respirator, which helps oxygenate the brain.
