Biden and Newsom meet on campaign trail in California

Gavin Newsom says he is ‘all in’ for Biden 2024, vows not to make White House run again

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday became the fourth Democratic White House hopeful to endorse Joe Biden on the campaign trail in California, a staunch Democratic state where Biden won his first term as Vice President and then a second term representing California.

“Joe Biden is the right man for the job,” Newsom told ABC 7 during an appearance in San Diego. “I mean, I’m all in for him.”

The endorsement comes two weeks before Biden faces off with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders for the nomination in what could potentially be a contested convention, as the party is inching toward the Iowa caucuses. Biden and Sanders would face off in a head-to-head primary in California, the birthplace of both men.

California also could play a key role in determining how Democrats in Washington choose their nominee in 2020, when they select their nominee for president. The state’s top two statewide offices are both open in November, with a November runoff between the winner of the Primary 2 seat and the nominee from the Primary 1 race if no one wins a majority of the vote.

“The stakes are high and we are all on the line,” Newsom said when asked about the stakes during Newsom’s event. “We’re at the beginning of the largest election of our lifetimes and here we are at the highest point of the end.”

Newsom and Biden spoke at the Pacific Beach City Council Chambers in San Diego on the campaign trail about four months after their meeting in Washington, D.C. The two had previously met when the state’s Democratic Party head, former Mayor Willie Brown, introduced the two at the California Democratic Party meeting in San Francisco.

The pair discussed a host of issues including the opioid epidemic, healthcare access, and gun violence, and Newsom pledged to continue working with President Trump to make California safer and stronger in the wake of a mass shooting in 2017, when a gunman killed 20 people at a Borderline Bar and Grill in El Paso, Texas.
