The man who shot at migrants at the border is out of jail

When a man in a balaclava fired into a crowd of people at a California beach in July, killing eight people and wounding 13, he did not expect he would be arrested.

The suspect, 27-year-old Edgar Maddison Welch of San Clemente, said to the police he had gone to the beach to confront a group of migrants who had earlier harassed his girlfriend. He said he was there to apologize, but some of the men started shouting at him and throwing rocks. He said he pulled out a handgun he had bought earlier that day and shot at the group.

He was arrested at the scene and booked into jail.

That weekend, a similar incident took place on a stretch of U.S. Highway 90 just north of San Diego. Three teens were killed and more than a dozen others wounded when a man in a truck fired a hail of bullets into a crowded group of people, striking 11 in the back during what an coroner described as a “horrific” event.

The man, identified by police as 26-year-old Gerardo Alaniz, was arrested and charged with killing a man and wounding a woman in a separate incident.

Alaniz is now out of jail after posting $200,000 bail in the shooting case.
