David Foster, 72, says he has ‘never regretted’ having a baby in his 70s with wife Katharine McPhee, 38.

Foster, 72, says the couple could have stopped having children when they were both 25, given his declining health. They had their first when he was 29 and she was 13.

Foster, a businessman who lives in Virginia, said the two fell in love and decided to have two more.

‘I never regretted one more than the other,’ he told The New York Times in an interview published Monday. ‘Once you start, you start.’

Foster’s new wife, an actress, is 18 years younger than him, so he said he never felt the need to have more children. ‘If we can afford it and have good insurance, then we do. The last thing you want is to bring a child to a hospital bed. We had a great medical system. We had a great pediatrician. He was just wonderful with children and with teenagers. And those days are gone,’ he said. ‘We’re all different. Every life has its own joys and its own struggles.’

‘I was too old to have more children. I couldn’t do them more than I could do and was good at. They wouldn’t bring happiness to me,’ the actor told the Times.

After she finished a film on the Great Wall, the then-23-year-old McPhee was asked to marry the actor and he agreed.

Foster said their first child would wait until they had enough money to start a family. He thought it would happen if they hit it off, but they did not.

‘We didn’t hit it off,’ Foster said. ‘It just wasn’t meant to be.’
